A tribute to Julie Van Cleave, whose 27 years of faithful leadership helped shape the mission, stewardship, and future of the Siebert Lutheran Foundation.
Some leaders are remembered for the moments when they took center stage. Others are remembered for what became possible because they were in the room.
For 27 years, Julie Van Cleave’s influence has reached far beyond the meeting, the decision, or the moment, and her leadership has significantly shaped who we are today.
Julie’s leadership at the Siebert Lutheran Foundation was never defined by titles or recognition. Instead, it was marked by thoughtful questions, careful listening, unwavering integrity, and a deep belief that faithful stewardship is ultimately God's work.
When Julie joined the Foundation's Board of Directors, she became the first woman to serve on the board. It was an important milestone, but Julie never sought to make history. She simply sought to serve well, helping strengthen Lutheran ministries and position the Foundation for generations to come.
Over nearly three decades, Julie served as Board Chair, Vice Chair & Secretary, Treasurer, Chair of the Executive Committee, and Chair of the Investment, Finance, and Audit Committee, and numerous other board leadership positions. Her steady leadership and sound judgment became trusted constants around the board table.
Her professional career certainly prepared her for the role. Before retiring as Chief Investment Officer of the University of Wisconsin Foundation, Julie held senior investment leadership positions at Mason Street Advisors, Deutsche Asset Management, and Oppenheimer Funds.
But those who served alongside her know her greatest contribution wasn't financial expertise alone.
It was her perspective.
Julie often spoke about stewardship as requiring both careful planning and deep trust. Reflecting on nearly three decades of board service, she said,
"We've always been so diligent, but we've also held faith that God would provide. That diligence and faith together have led us to the success we've seen over the decades."
It is a simple statement, but one that captures the values that guided her leadership.
Julie understood that every investment ultimately served a greater purpose. Behind every grant was a ministry. Behind every financial decision was an opportunity to strengthen churches, schools, nonprofits, and communities that share Christ's love in infinite ways.
That same spirit shaped her life beyond the boardroom. For years, Julie and her husband, Jay, quietly served on the mowing team at Mt. Carmel Lutheran Church. It was a simple act of service that reflected the same humility and faithfulness she brought to every leadership role.
Her discipline also extends beyond ministry. Julie is one of the nation's top Masters swimmers, achieving multiple U.S. Masters Swimming Top Ten rankings and national age-group relay titles—a fitting reflection of the perseverance that has defined her life and leadership.
In April 2026, the Board of Directors recognized Julie's retirement by electing her to the position of Director Emeritus, honoring not only her years of service but the lasting influence she has had on the Foundation.
Julie Van Cleave's legacy reminds us that meaningful leadership is rarely built through dramatic moments. More often, it grows through years of quiet servant leadership, thoughtful decisions, and a steadfast commitment to God's work.
